MASTERCHEF cracks open the champagne this series as it celebrates a milestone.
Twenty years of the hit show, presented by foodie veterans John Torode and Gregg Wallace, have spawned many chef success stories.
And to celebrate its big birthday there’ll be eight weeks of intense competition that will see 58 passionate amateur cooks take on some extraordinary challenges.
From a Birmingham mum who hasn’t told her kids she’ll be on telly, to a dedicated chocoholic and a vet who wants a new career in a kitchen, they’ll all be hoping to land the legendary title.
“This is where the wave of ambition hits the rock of reality,” yells Gregg, always full of words of wisdom – when he’s not full of pudding.
Tonight’s starter sees six hopefuls take on a brand new challenge called Basic To Brilliant – taking an everyday ingredient and turning it into something spectacular.
Two will be safe, but the other four have to take part in an invention test with a twist. Armed with a cooked potato and a basic recipe, they will need to create a dish celebrating one of Gregg’s favourite foods – the pasta dish potato gnocchi.
Only the best two cooks will bag the remaining aprons.
And that’s not the end of it – the last four standing have to whip up a two-course menu for three guests who are previous Masterchef finalists. One cook will be given marching orders while three get a place in the quarter-final.
It’s the usual tasty fare from this brilliant show that has become TV comfort food.
