MOYES: GIVE PHILLIPS A BREAK

- FROM BACK PAGE

we’re going to stand with him and help him as much as we possibly can. Obviously, we need all our supporters to give all our players, whoever it is, their support.

“Sometimes, when people are not playing so well, they need support and everybody to get behind them.

“Let’s hope we can change his luck and his form between now and the end of the season.”

West Ham were 3-1 ahead at St James’ Park when Phillips was sent on as a substitute with 21 minutes remaining.

He gave away a penalty by accidentally kicking the leg of Toon winger Anthony Gordon and was then partly to blame for Harvey Barnes’ dramatic stoppage-time winner (celebrating, right), failing to track the run of the winger before he smashed home.

Precious little has gone right for

Phillips since he made his loan switch from Manchester City to east London.

He was at fault for a goal with virtually his first touch against Bournemouth and, in his second appearance, gifted another to Manchester United. He was needlessly sent off in his fourth match at Nottingham Forest and, on his last start, was hauled off at half-time with West Ham 2-0 down at home to Burnley.

But despite his poor form Moyes believes his spell with

West Ham can be turned around, as Phillips bids to revive his Euros hopes after being dropped from Gareth Southgate’s squad for last month’s friendlies.

Moyes added: “Kalvin is an international player and I do believe an excellent footballer.

“And I do believe we can still make something out of the time we’ve got left with him here.”
