JAILHOUSE SHOCK AT LAG PARTY

Drugs, booze and dancing displayed in brazen video

- BY PAUL HEALY news@irishmirror.ie

AN investigation has been launched over this shocking video showing inmates partying with drugs and booze.

Sources confirmed the footage was filmed in Dublin’s Wheatfield Prison after the contraband was smuggled inside via a drone.

In the film, three lags danced as they showed off phones, packages, bottles of booze and tubes of suspected cannabis.

One prisoner can also be seen brandishing a knife.

Sources say it is suspected the video was filmed and uploaded to social media by inmates.

It comes as the Irish Mirror revealed two recent incidents where lags flew a drone over the yard of Wheatfield Prison to drop drugs to the prisoners below.

There is now a real concern at the ease at which they can smuggle contraband in this way.

One source said: “These drones are incredibly difficult to detect.

“There is a net there over the yard and there are sophisticated methods to detect drugs, but the reality is they’re still getting in.

“The real concern is these things could drop a firearm inside.”

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service declined to comment on what is now a spate of incidents at Wheatfield Prison in recent weeks, citing “security and operational reasons”.

However the official did point to an already issued general statement on contraband, citing new technologies and methods are being used to increase detection.

The source said: “The IPS is committed to preventing the access of contraband including drugs into prisons and it continues to be a high priority.

“We have committed to continue to invest in new technologies and measures to support our efforts to keep contraband out of prisons.

“Prison staff have increased the use of random and intelligence-led cell searches on a daily basis.

“Our canine unit carry out searches around the prisons, including a greater focus on searching deliveries into prisons.

“The IPS continues to engage with gardai to prevent contraband entering prison and this happens at local and national level.”
