Roy is off the street
Corrie cafe owner locked up over Lauren’s murder
CORONATION Street’s Roy Cropper is left shocked and confused this week as he is flung in a cell and charged with murdering missing teenager Lauren Bolton.
Viewers know the much-loved but often misunderstood cafe owner has nothing to do with the disappearance of his former employee.
But Det Sgt Lisa Swain reckons she has got her man, having delved into Roy’s history and discovered he once abducted a foster child.
David Neilson, who has played Roy in the ITV soap for almost 30 years, said: “He is innocent in every respect – he is innocent of the crime, but he is also an innocent soul.
“He never thought for one minute it would come to this.
“He truly felt that if he simply answered everything honestly it would all be OK and he was naive to assume that being innocent meant that he would be seen to be innocent.”
David, 75, added: “What I like about this storyline is the way it has gone back to 1995 when Roy first arrived.
“It is reminiscent of when people were suspicious of his behaviour and thought he was creepy.
“All this history will be used against him, things that have happened in the past like abducting a foster child.
“All that makes this storyline interesting to play and to watch unfold.”
Roy has been the detective’s prime suspect since he misguidedly deep cleaned Lauren’s flat after her mysterious disappearance.
Det Sgt Swain, played by Vicky Myers, is doing everything in her power to secure a conviction.
After being questioned and then charged, horrified Roy can only sit alone in the dark cell and await his court hearing with dread.
It will fall to his nearest and dearest on the cobbles to try to get to the bottom of what really happened to Lauren, played by 22-year-old Cait Fitton, in the hope of finding answers that could clear Roy’s name.
