A NEW club night running from 6pm to 10pm has been launched for over 30s with kids or those too tired to stay out late.

And promoters joked that customers for the new monthly Saturday event at Cyprus Avenue in Cork will have to bring their Xtra-vision card if they want to hit the dance floor.

One of the organisers, Eoin Aher, said the club, which promises to play Eighties, Nineties, and Noughties bangers, will require proof revellers were around in the age of video rental.

However, he said on a serious note that IDS will be checked to ensure the crowd is over 30.

The organiser said: “If you are 30 years old but look 20 you better bring ID.”

He added that there has been a “phenomenal” response to the event already, with 50% of tickets already sold out for its first night on May 4.

There will be no expense spared, according to Eoin, who said customers can expect confetti drops, smoke machines and glow sticks for that extra Eighties feel. He added: “It will be totally blacked out inside, so it will feel like you’re in a nightclub late at night.”

He told The 96FM Opinion Line with PJ Coogan: “If that does get too much for you we have a rooftop bar and up there will be an indie and rock zone with acoustic acts.”

DJ Rowan Meegan said no music from the past 12 years will be played, as dancers can expect hits from the likes of Wham!, Ricky Martin, Backstreet Boys, Destiny’s Child, and Black Eyed Peas.

He added: “I like the old classics, so long may they last. But, I can’t get over the response, it’s been phenomenal. [The capacity] is 1,600 so we will have a healthy crowd of people who know what they want and know each other, it’ll be all the old faces.”

Eoin said he got the idea from venues in the UK and mainland

Europe that have been rolling out evening events for older crowds.

He said: “Clubbing is catering for the 18 to 24-year-olds and once you hit 24 it turns on its cliff face in terms of people going to nightclubs.

“If you are over 30 you might want to go out but maybe kids are in the equation and you have to sort babysitters until half-two in the morning or the kids have a soccer match on Sunday, or maybe you’re working shifts.”

The organiser said the evening event is perfect for people who want to get the bus home afterward, grab a takeaway, put their feet up, and still be up early the following day.

Eoin said: “For those over 30 if you do go out to a nightclub the music is too young or the crowd is too young. “You’re then waiting on a taxi at night in the rain hoping that one shows up or if you book a taxi normally it cancels on you because they picked someone else up. So that’s where Club 30 comes in, you’re out at 6pm, everyone is over 30 years of age, playing lots of throwbacks.

“And if you are invited to someone’s house on Sunday dinner you can be fresh and ready to go again.” The first event takes place at 6pm on May 4. Tickets are €10, with organisers encouraging people to buy

theirs soon.
