Duchess gives pals jam and competes with King
THE Duchess of Sussex may be in a sticky spot with her father-in-law King Charles after launching a rival jam.
Meghan, 42, has made a limited edition strawberry pot, the first product in her lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard.
Charles’s Duchy of Cornwall estate’s conserve has been selling in top grocery stores for years.
Meghan’s preserve has gone down well with close friends who received the first specially numbered batch of 50 jars.
Designer Tracy Robbins, who was pictured with Meghan at the premiere of Bob Marley film One Love in Jamaica in January, posted a picture of her gift.
She wrote alongside: “Breakfast, lunch and dinner just got a little sweeter. Thank you for the delicious basket. I absolutely love this jam, so not sure I’m sharing with anyone. Thank you, M!” Her jar read “17 of 50”.
Argentinian model Delfina Blaquier, the wife of Prince Harry’s polo player pal Nacho Figueras, also received a pot. Next to a picture of the jam spread on a piece of toast, Blaquier wrote: “Strawberry jam makes me happy.
“And I love your jam, @ Americanrivieraorchard.”
The Duchess’s new brand is a nod to Santa Barbara, California, where she and Prince Harry live with Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two.
The area has long been known as the “American Riviera”.
A US trademark application reveals plans for an online store selling tableware, glasses, decanters, kitchen linens, and food items such as jams, marmalade, oils and spreads. The trademark application is awaiting examination and seeking approval for cookbooks.
Despite the preview, Meghan’s American Riviera Orchard website remains blank, only asking visitors to provide their email to be notified about “products, availability, and updates” from the brand, which she launched in March.
Duchy Organic was set up by then Prince Charles in 1990 from his Cornwall estate.
Although Prince William is now Duke of Cornwall the firm is separate. A jar of Waitrose Duchy Organic strawberry jam is €3.28.
