One Flynn a million hit for me

- BY DARAGH SMALL

THIS summer 20 years will have passed but Paul Flynn still gets quizzed about whether he meant it.

Sixteen minutes into the second half of the Munster final against Cork, Flynn lit up Semple Stadium with a bullet into the top-corner from a long range free.

“It’s funny enough when you are playing golf and you meet someone for the first time: ‘can I ask you a question?’ You know what it is and I’d often say yes I did, before they ask the question,” said Flynn

“It’s a bit of craic and I might still get the odd pint because of it, so it’s grand.”

There were other sports that came naturally to Flynn, most notably football where he ended up at

Aston Villa sharing digs with Dwight Yorke during a brief stint. He started golfing in his 20s but his

first handicap was 16. By the time he joined Tramore GC he was playing off 0.5 and he has improved.

Waterford and Cork will renew rivalries at Walsh Park this Sunday when the Munster Championship throws-in, the Déise have only won two provincial crowns since that day when Flynn top-scored with 1-7.

It was an era of intense rivalry between the two counties and names like Flynn, John Mullane, Dan Shanahan, Ken Mcgrath and Eoin Kelly rang out loud around the country.

“Helmets weren’t compulsory, and you could see the expressions, the character, the face on the characters,” said Flynn.

“You could see what it meant to them and people, it was more personable, people could relate more to people not stuck behind cages. They were cracking matches, the weather seemed to be good.”
