Tributes flooding in for ‘kind-hearted’ Shay as funeral is announced

GAA clubs extend sympathies after swimming pool tragedy

FUNERAL arrangemen­ts have been announced for “kindhearte­d” Shay Lynch, who drowned in a horror swimming pool accident at the weekend.

The seven-year-old, from Clonlara in Co Clare, got into difficulty after attending a birthday party at the Lakeside Hotel & Leisure Centre in Killaloe on Saturday.

He was recovered from the water unconsciou­s and efforts were made to try and save his life at the poolside.

Gardai and emergency services attended the hotel and the boy was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick, where he was pronounced dead.

The swimming pool at the hotel’s leisure centre was immediatel­y closed.

Shay will repose at Mcmahon’s Funeral Home in Blackwater today from 5pm to 7pm.

His funeral Mass will take place tomorrow at 11am in St Senan’s Church, Clonlara followed by burial afterwards in St Thomas’ Church grounds, Bridgetown.

His death notice on RIP.IE says: “Predecease­d by his nana Christina. Survived by his heartbroke­n family, parents James and Tania, sister Abi, grandparen­ts Jerome, Joe and Kathleen, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, neighbours and his many friends.”

Shay, who was a pupil at Scoil Seanain Naofa, Clonlara, has been remembered by his school for his “bright smile and his kind heart and will be greatly missed”.

Earlier Taoiseach Simon Harris was among those to express his shock at the tragedy.

He said: “Absolutely heartbreak­ing. I know people right across Ireland are keeping this family and the community of Clonlara in Co Clare in their thoughts and prayers at such a sad and difficult time.”

Clonlara GAA Club, where Shay played for the Under 9 team, said: “Shay was a talented, loved and valued member of our U9s team.”

Truagh Camogie Club also paid tribute to Shay saying he was “a great Truagh Clonlara supporter cheering on his sister Abi, aunty Caroline and cousin Ruth, all of whom he looked up to so much,” and announced as a mark of respect all Truagh camogie activities will be paused for the coming days.
