Scheffler on Tiger’s tail again

- BY JOSHUA LEES

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER became the first player on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods in 2006 to follow up a major championship victory with a win one week later after sealing the RBC Heritage title.

Fresh from landing his second green jacket in three years at the Masters, Scheffler’s domination continued at Harbour Town.

Scheffler returned to the South Carolina course yesterday holding a fivestroke lead with three holes to play after a storm halted proceedings on Sunday.

He dropped a shot at the last but still finished on 20 under to complete a fourshot victory, his fourth in five starts, over fellow American Sahith Theegala.

Scheffler, who has now earned $18.69million (£15.17m) this season – more than double the next highest earner, Wyndham Clark, has earned a number of comparisons to Woods in recent months.

And while he has a long way to go to match the 15-time major winner, his current dominance bears all the hallmarks of Woods in his pomp, who was the last PGA Tour player to win four times in five events when he did it in 2007-08.

Speaking after his latest win, the world No. 1 said: “Last week was fantastic and then coming into this week I didn’t have my usual prep work but, showed up, rested and was ready to go.

“Mentally the last month or so has been as good as I’ve been in a long time and I think that is why I’m seeing some of the results.”

Scheffler’s next outing may well be next month’s PGA Championship at Valhalla, with the 27-yearold’s wife Meredith expecting the imminent birth of their first child.

Meanwhile, Nelly Korda won the Chevron Championship by two shots in Texas to secure her second major title and a remarkable fifth straight tournament win.

The 25-year-old’s victory tied the record for most consecutive LPGA wins, with Nancy Lopez in 1978 and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05).
