MCDOWELL STILL HAS HIS MAJOR AMBITIONS

- BY JOSHUA LEES

GRAEME MCDOWELL has revealed his plans to once again head to US Open and Open Championship qualifying in a bid to make his return to the major stage.

Mcdowell was one of the high-profile names who switched to LIV Golf in 2022 but since then his position in the world rankings has taken a hit.

Despite their quick ascent, LIV continues to host their 54-hole, no-cut events without ranking points on offer.

In October last year, LIV’S latest attempt to secure points was turned down by the ranking system and it abandoned its pursuit in March.

This lack of ranking points has led to a slump in the world list for several big names, including Mcdowell.

The former world No.4 currently sits at 755th, making him ineligible to participate in any of the four majors - including the US Open, which he won in 2010.

With no direct route into either the trip to Pinehurst or the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, Mcdowell has had to resort to qualifying.

Smash GC star Mcdowell told Mirror Sport: “I will go to US Open qualifying and I will go to Open qualifying as well.

“I’m going to see, and do what I can do to get into these events.”

The decline in LIV’S representation at the four majors has slowly begun over the past 12 months, as the effects of their world ranking snub begin to kick in.

And Mcdowell added: ”The major championships are still hugely important and defining moments of anyone’s career.

“Regardless of what anyone thinks, everyone of the 54 LIV players out here really gives a s*** about the majors. They are the most important events and we care a lot.

“From my point of view I will be working as hard as I can to get into the two majors that I have available to me.”
