ATTWELL IS IN MIDDLE OF WOLVES FURY

- BY TIM NASH

WOLVES and referee Stuart Attwell were involved in the latest VAR controversy against 10-man Bournemouth at Molineux last night.

Attwell ruled out a 65th-minute equaliser by Wolves for Hwang Hee-chan after substitute Matheus Cunha had swung an arm into Justin Kluivert off the ball.

The decision enraged Wolves fans, who chanted ‘Premier League, corrupt as f***’ and ‘Nuno’s right, Attwell’s sh**e’.

That was reference to complaints about the official by Nottingham Forest after VAR decisions in their 2-0 defeat against Everton, because he is a Luton fan.

Attwell then sent-off Milos Kerkez in the 79th minute after the Bournemouth left back lunged in on substitute Matt Doherty.

But by then, Bournemouth led through Antoine Semenyo.

A Semenyo shot hit Mario Lemina’s right leg before being tipped away by Jose Sa then a

Dominic Solanki deflected effort looped up and wide.

Sa came to Wolves’ rescue again when leftback Milos Kerkez produced Bournemouth’s best chance.

The goalkeeper clawed away his curling effort after Kluivert’s backheel left him to pick his spot.

A slip from Nelson Semedo left Kluivert clean through but Sa brilliantly denied him with a one-handed save. Wolves finally forced an opening when Mario Lemina’s goalbound shot hit Illya Zabarni, before Rayan Ait-nouri’s curling effort drifted wide.

Bournemouth then scored the goal they had been threatening on 37 minutes, Semenyo (above) ramming home from five yards after Kilman slipped from Kerkez’s cross following Kluivert’s through ball.

Bournemouth remained a threat and Marcos Senesi’s shot caught Kluivert to wrongfoot Sa, who managed to react to keep it out.

Alex Scott’s header then dropped on top of the net from a corner.

Kluivert almost made it 2-0 but his shot hit Toti and dropped behind.

The VAR flashpoint followed when Hwang Hee-chan headed home Semedo’s cross.

VAR was called on to intervene to request Attwell to look at the screen and he ruled against the home side, booking Cunha.

Kilman was denied by VAR in the 99th minute when offside.
