SCHU STOKES THE FIRES FOR A WINNING RUN
BY
STEVEN SCHUMACHER has demanded Jekyll and Hyde Stoke do something they have not managed for six months – win back-to-back games.
The Potters are on the brink of safety after reaching the 50-point mark with the 3-0 victory against Schumacher’s old club and relegation rivals Plymouth.
But they are yet to string together consecutive victories since the Scouser (above) took charge in December.
The Stoke manager said: “It’s all about consistency and it’s going to need us to play with the same high energy levels every week. If you can do it physically, then you build the momentum you need to get back-to-back results.
“Our running stats are a lot better, they’ve improved, and as a result we’ve moved up that particular league table. “It’s not acceptable when the other side runs more than us because that doesn’t give you a chance to win games.
“We’re all aware of how difficult it’s going to be down at Southampton because their home record is outstanding. But we’ll go there with the belief that we can get something from the game.”
Saints are preparing for the play-offs after back-to-back defeats to Cardiff and Leicester ended their hopes of automatic promotion. Russell Martin (circle) is determined that his side maintain high standards for the final two league games.
“I’ve seen a lot of pain, a lot of hurt and a lot of frustration from the players, it’s been tough for everyone,” said the Saints boss.
“We know we can still achieve what we want to achieve and we have a chance to make sure we can forget about what’s happened this week. How you respond and deal with setbacks will always define you.”
