So many strong characters, born leaders. Nobody would put Fernandes in that category.

In so many games, he just looks bewildered and lost, and often petulant.

When things aren’t going well for United, you see a bunch of individuals, not a team.

They don’t rally around each other — part of the blame for that must lie with the captain.

Marcus Rashford is an issue too. A good man and a gifted footballer who looks to have lost faith in United.

Alejandro Garnacho and Mainoo have had their moments but are very young and have a huge amount to prove.

I do like plenty of what I’ve seen of Mainoo but he lacks a bit of pace and athleticism.

Cost

That could cost him long term as a midfielder.

I’d be surprised if United make the Champions League spots and, even if they did, how would they cope?

We saw this season they were dismal at that level, falling flat in a group that wasn’t the most challenging.

Gary Neville claimed on Sky recently that United are on the rise, and that Liverpool will soon be in decline, due to the departure of Jurgen Klopp.

Neville is showing his United bias. There are no rational reasons for making such a claim.

Of course losing Klopp will be a big blow to Liverpool but the new manager will inherit a squad full of quality — one loaded with young players who are only going to get better.

United have maybe six players you could depend on. That one of those is Maguire, messed around by ten Hag and derided by the fans, says a lot.

I look at United and see a team that a title chaser would love to play on the run-in.

They’d figure there’s a softness there to be exploited. An unbeaten run — SIX games, remember — doesn’t change that.
