A PRISON officer appeared in court yesterday charged with possession of €144,000 of cannabis.

Marta Cypara (37) was before Tallaght District Court where it was alleged she had the drug at her Co Dublin home on Saturday.

The accused, who works in the prisoner escort unit, was arrested by officers from Tallaght Garda station’s drug unit.

Cypara appeared alongside her 28-year-old co-accused Matausz Kilkowski charged with possession of cannabis for sale or supply and possession of cannabis.

Dressed in a hoodie and wearing tracksuit bottoms, Ms Cypara, of Saggart Hill Mews in Saggart, stood silently in court.

Caution

Garda Michael Brislane of Tallaght Garda Station said she made “no reply” after caution.

Defence solicitor Ellen Reid told Judge Patricia McNamara her client is in “secure employment” “at present” when asked by the judge of her work details.

She granted bail on condition of a €1,000 cash lodgement.

The court heard the accused did not have the cash in court – and was therefore remanded in custody with consent to bail.

Garda Brislane told the court Ms Cypara surrendered her passport and asked she not apply for other travel papers.

She must also reside at her address and inform officers of any intention to change it and sign on at Tallaght Garda station three times a week.

The accused will appear before the remand court in the Dochas prison next week.

Mr Kilkowski also sat silently during the short hearing.

Gardai did not seek a cash lodgement in relation to him – and he was granted bail with similar conditions to Ms Cypara.

He will appear in court again on December 19.
