‘Area turning into a kip’

RESIDENTS terrorised by joyriders in Cherry Orchard have warned they are turning the area into “a kip”.

It is understood that the rallying continued along Cherry Orchard Avenue near Ballyfermot after Gardai left the scene on Monday night.

The vehicles were later burned out on a green area beside a creche and Dublin City Council removed the metal car shells yesterday morning.

The Irish Daily Star visited the scene yesterday and witnessed how the smouldering remains left two large black circles in the grass — while other ones from separate occasions were also visible.

Multiple tyre tracks in the shape of circles were also visible — while areas of the railings into the green area which had been rammed or damaged by robbed cars previously were replaced with large boulders.

Fed-up locals revealed joyriding is a nearly everyday occurrence and said people are at their “wit’s end”.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “This area is an absolute kip, I’ve put in a transfer request. I want to get out of here.

“My kids were out playing on the road when they started. I had to run out and get them in.

“It’s absolutely disgusting. Nobody should have to live like this.”

Neighbours chatting amongst themselves over a cup of coffee on their front wall were heard saying “it’s a bleeding disgrace”.

When asked about the events on Monday, they said: “It’s shocking. Joyriding happens almost every day but not to the level that we witnessed here the other night.

“Things have gotten so much worse around here in the last few weeks.

“It’s only a matter of time before somebody is seriously injured or killed.

“They’ve knocked down a couple of lamp posts before as well. Things are only getting worse.”

People Before Profit Councillor Hazel De Nortúin told “I suppose what we witnessed is the peak of what has been going on for some time now.

“It’s about time those in power listened and gave us the funding to properly resource this area.”
