He acknowledged there were “legitimate concerns” but said: “How do we solve it? We solve it by negotiating through the issues that are there.

“From our point of view, from the European Union, we solve it by implementing the protocol that was agreed with the British government, which the British government signed and fought an election, passed through Parliament.

“We think it’s the best and only solution.

“I think we have to solve this problem, I think we can, I think we should.”

A MAN appeared in court yesterday charged with stealing his father’s car, ramming three other vehicles and injuring two people in Fermoy.

Jonathan Woodside (21) was remanded in custody and requested to undergo psychiatric assessment and also charged with having a flick knife.

The college student, of Killally West, Kilworth in Co Cork, appeared before Mallow District Court as Det Garda Dave O’Shea gave evidence of the arrest charge on Saturday following the alleged offences.

He told Judge John Keane that he arrested Woodside on the Dublin Road in Fermoy at 3.55 pm on Saturday.

It is alleged that he caused extensive damage to a horsebox and a car and collided with a car driven by an elderly woman.

Collision

Det Garda O’Shea said that he had the blue lights and siren on his garda car switched but had to move on to the hard shoulder to prevent a collision.

The court heard Woodside also allegedly reversed in to the garda car.

He was charged with the unlawful taking of a car owned by his father and being the driver of a vehicle which failed to remain at the scene of collisions.

He was further charged with causing damage to a Hyundai Tucson garda car and of being being the driver of a car which damaged two vehicles and injuried two individuals on MacCurtain Street in Fermoy and on the Dublin Road on the town’s outskirts.

Injuries

He is also accused of with driving without a licence, insurance and of failing to give gardai his name.

Det Garda O’Shea said that the accused made no reply when the charges were put to him.

But he told Judge Keane that Woodside was co-operative, remorseful and had expressed concern that injuries may have been caused during the alleged incident.

Judge Keane declined to grant bail and asked that Woodside undergo psychiatric assessment in prison. He was remanded in custody to appear at Mallow District Court via video on Monday.
