Shaw: I’ll fight for my place

- ■■Jeremy CROSS

LUKE SHAW is desperate to win back his place in the Manchester United side ahead of this weekend’s explosive derby showdown at the Etihad.

Shaw found himself axed by Erik ten Hag last month following United’s woeful start to the new season, which saw them suffer backto-back defeats to Brighton and Brentford.

The England ace has not started August 13 after losing his place at left back to new signing Tyrell Malacia.

Forced

It has been a frustrating six weeks for Shaw, who has been forced to watch United’s four game winning streak in the League from the sidelines.

But he put his domestic woes behind him to help England earn a thrilling 3-3 draw with Germany at Wembley on Monday night.

The defender boosted his hopes of a World

Cup place with an impressive performance, including scoring his side’s opening goal to inspire a fightback and remind Ten Hag what he’s capable of.

And while Shaw says he understands why the Dutchman axed him, the 27-year-old is hoping to force his way back into his plans.

United face a showdown with Manchester City on Sunday and Shaw said: “It’s what everyone wants (regular minutes). I think Erik ten Hag, he knows my qualities. He knows what I am capable of and we’ve had chats.

“It’s understandable that, and I even agree, the start of the season wasn’t good enough and he had to make changes. I accepted it.

“The only thing I can do is train hard and wait for my opportunities, whether that’s in the cup games or the Premier League. Whatever I play in, I just have to be ready and play at the standard I should be at.”
