Adding to the ‘deadly’ buzz is the new addition of Halloween Town, a fun horror-village festival zone with a food court and dance stage.

The event will also feature Ireland’s first 3D binaural experience, where you’ll settle down in the dark, using only sound and your imaginatio­n to encounter The Nightmare Realm’s take on the classic Irish ghost story — the Legend of The Banshee.

BIRR CASTLE, OFFALY

Birr Castle Demesne will host a wide programme of exciting activities over the Halloween break from October 29 to November 5.

It includes a special Halloween pumpkin trail, the Wild Connection­s Bird Watching Nature Trail, the Red Tree Trail with its stunning 65 trees in all their autumnal colours, the Gallery Challenge and the Solar Trail.

HURLOWEEN, DUBLIN

Explore Irish games and ancient myths this Samhain with spirited guides at the ‘Hurloween’ Tours at the GAA Museum at Croke Park.

From October 29 to November 4, your GAA-mad goblins can enjoy a special tour of the famous stadium and the GAA Museum where they will learn more about Ireland’s ancient sport from the time of Setanta right up to the era of modern GAA stars like Cian Lynch.

A special ‘Warriors and Hurlers Workshop’ will capture imaginatio­ns as younger visitors learn all about the story of Setanta, a master hurler who according to legend used his sliotar and camán to slay the hound of Chulainn and receive the new name Cú Chulainn. Every child on tour will receive a book telling the story of Setanta and other Irish legends, which is a perfect Halloween treat!

CAHERNANE HOUSE, KERRY

As part of its Halloween package, the historic Cahernane House Hotel in Killarney will once again host a night of storytelli­ng with Eddie Lenihan, one of the few traditiona­l seanchaí still working in Ireland.

Eddie has collected stories from people all around Ireland who have had encounters with fairies or mythical creatures as well as historical tales of figures such as the banshee, demons, ogres, giants, and ghosts.

The story-telling evening is for residents only and is part of a two-night Halloween Break which includes other ‘not so scary’ activities for children such as a family Halloween movie with popcorn.
