Iwobi is inspired by fans

ALEX IWOBI says he was never in any doubt he would be a success at Everton because the passion of the club’s support makes him feel “unstoppable”.

The €40m signing struggled in his first two seasons at Goodison Park after his move from Arsenal, with fans turning on the expensive import.

Yet the unflinching faith in his own ability remained even through the lowest points of his Blues experience, with the midfielder explaining that a new manager and a fresh start gave him a new lease of life.

“No, I never had any doubts I never had the mindset that it wasn’t going to work here,” he said.

“I had the mindset that I’d turn it around and when the opportunity came with the new manager, I used it as a new chapter of my life and said to myself, ‘Forget the past. What’s happened has happened. Now let’s go again’.

Reason

“What I realised here is fans appreciate 100 per cent, as long as you show that you can do everything because there’s a reason you’re here at Everton because you have ability.”

Iwobi arrived at Goodison Park late in the summer transfer window of 2019, but five different managers

including caretaker Duncan Ferguson in that time hardly allowed him to settle.

It was only the arrival of Frank Lampard at the end of January which allowed him to truly find himself in the blue shirt and he revealed the role of the fans in his revival.

“Their support, you almost feel unstoppable, you feel that you can do anything on the pitch,” said Iwobi.

“I like to play forward and create chances but even if one doesn’t come off, the fans will support you and give you that belief to keep going.

“I’ve had spells where I’ve had one or two good games but, in terms of doing it on a consistent basis, this is my best moment.

“I feel like it’s the most confident I’ve been while I’ve been at Everton but there’s still a lot I want to do.”
