Crash soldier helps others

-

AN INVESTIGATION was underway last night into the tragic death of an Irish-born soldier who was knocked down and fatally injured near his barracks in the UK.

Private Robert Myers (39), from Kilkenny, died in hospital in Southhampton after he was hit as he walked home.

Of his organ donation, his family said: “In death, Robert gave the greatest gift, a chance at life to four people through organ donation.”

A BRAVE car owner — who confronted thieves attempting to steal his vehicle’s catalytic converter — has spoken of his shock when they threatened him.

The horror incident happened on Wednesday afternoon outside the man’s home in a west Dublin suburb while he was working from home.

Shocking CCTV footage, seen by The Star, shows a silver car pull up outside the man’s property just before 2pm.

Two masked men run onto the man’s driveway and start jacking up the front passenger side of his Toyota Prius.

Seconds later the video shows one of the masked male, wearing a grey tracksuit and baseball cap, swinging the iron bar part of the jack at the car owner.

The second male is seen underneath the car allegedly trying to remove the car’s catalytic converter.

The whole ordeal lasted around ten minutes before the brazen thieves appeared to get flustered and left emptyhanded.

Speaking exclusively to this paper, the car owner told us yesterday: “It was something like out of Grand Theft Auto,” when he saw the callous thieves jacking up his car to steal the catalytic converter.

“I looked out the window and saw them come into the driveway and start jacking my car up.

“I asked them what are you doing,

you are on three cameras and I told them to stop and go away.

“I knew what they were after and I told them the part they want is probably only worth a few hundred euro in scrap — but it will cost me thousands to repair.

Reason

“One of them turned to me and said ‘Ah you’ll buy a new one [catalytic converter],” he said.

“I tried to reason with them but that wasn’t working so I went inside to call the gardai and left the front door open which I think flustered them a bit as one of them kept looking at the front door,” he said.

“With me giving them hassle, and the one under the car asking the other
