JON IS 9/2 T0 CONTINUE HIS RAHM-PAGE!

- ■■Denis KIRWAN

JON Rahm’s victory at last week’s American Express Championship was an incredible fourth win in his last six starts.

In his last nine tournaments, Rahm has four wins, three top-fives and two other top-10s.

Over that period, Rahm moved from World No.6 to No.3.

Rahm was 7/1 to win last week and was one of the nap selections from this column.

Rahm now is the 9/2 favourite to win the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines this week and that also looks a good bet as the Spaniard made his big breakthrough at the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open, landing his maiden success on a 13 under par total.

Rahm was second here in 2020 and T-3rd last year, so it’s a course that fits his eye.

Winning

Winning is a very nice habit and a third win in succession would put him in a relatively small club who would have managed to achieve this feat.

Byron Nelson won 11 times in a row back in 1945 while in the modern era, Tiger Woods managed to win seven successive tournaments in 2006/07, six times in a row in 1999/2000 and five times in succession in 2007/2008.

In recent years, only Rory McIlroy (2014) and Dustin Johnson (2017) have won three consecutive tournaments.

Two other players for your each-way shortlist at Torrey Pines, both at odds of 28/1, are Taylor Montgomery and the two-time former winner of this tournament, Jason Day.

Meanwhile, the second leg of the ‘Gulf Swing’ — the Hero Dubai Desert Classic — takes place this week at Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course.

Neither of the last two champions, Viktor Hovland and Paul Casey, will be present.

McIlroy will be making his seasonal return on a course where he landed his maiden victory on the European Tour in 2009 and added another victory in this event in 2015.

McIlroy, who was also third here last year, will be keen to keep Rahm at bay for his World No.1 spot.

Rory won three times last year and was out of the top 10 in just seven of his 22 starts worldwide in 2022.

Tyrrell Hatton has also shown his liking for the Emirates Majlis Course and looks a good value each-way play at odds of 12/1.

Hatton was T-7th at Abu Dhabi on his seasonal debut last weekend and finished off with a scorching back nine of 29 that included a hole-in-one.
