Sexton not hot on low tackle idea

Everton fans turn on Moshiri after Lamps is sacked

IRELAND captain Johnny Sexton has voiced his concern about the latest RFU initiative to lower tackles to below the waistline.

English rugby is set to ban above-the-waist tackles in community rugby matches — essentially below the top two tiers of the professional game — from next season.

The RFU say they want the adult game to “follow the principle of evasion” and avoid

“late dipping”.

“Look, I don’t agree with it,” said Sexton.

Fence

“There’s no point sitting on the fence really, is there?

“I just think you have tall people who play the game, it should be their decision to how they tackle.

“Of course we need to get the head shots out of the game, but the tackles we really need to take out are the reckless, outof-control, sprinting out of the line, tucking arms, all of those types of ones.

“Hitting someone (at chest level) should be an option. It’s not like you can’t get concussed

EVERTON are in turmoil on and off the pitch after Frank Lampard was sacked yesterday — but the club took five hours to confirm it.

Fans had already told owner Farhad Moshiri he was overseeing “chaos and dysfunction” even before the club left them in limbo over the manager’s position. (right)

Marcelo Bielsa and Sean Dyche are the front-runners to replace Lampard, who was told his fate yesterday in a phone call from Moshiri.

Former Leeds boss Bielsa has been approached by the Everton owner but it is not clear if the Iranian billionaire has the backing of the rest of the board to appoint him.

Cohesive

The potential candidates to replace Lampard point to the lack of cohesive thinking.

Former Burnley boss Dyche is bookies’ favourite and would base survival on a strong defence. He is keen on a full-time return to the Premier League.

Bielsa sees attack as the best form of defence.

Ralph Hasenhuttl is another of interest after he was sacked by Everton’s relegation rivals Southampton in November.

Lampard’s survival had been on a knife-edge for several weeks, and the Premier League strugglers did little to dispel the criticism of their fans yesterday.

The club is now searching for its eighth permanent manager in seven years, but the board are also ready to make a stop-gap (left) (left)
