FORMER Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has revealed he once asked football icon Eusebio for his shorts after a match as his teammate got his top — then wore them to death as beach shorts.
O’Neill, a manager and former player, said he was in awe of the Portuguese legend when he made his full debut for Northern Ireland in 1973 and was desperate to swap shirts with him.
However, O’Neill said all his teammates had the same idea and man-marked him for the last 10 minutes of the World Cup qualifier at Highfield Road, Coventry.
O’Neill said he tracked Eusebio down in the tunnel and left him “almost completely naked” by insisting he give him his shorts. Eusebio’s penalty in the 1-1 match went on to be the last goal he ever scored for Portugal. Speaking to the Blank podcast, the 70-year-old said: “Eusebio was probably no longer the player he was in 1966 but he was still a fine footballer, a fine physique of a man too. “Naturally towards the end of the game, there’s players man-marking Eusebio only to get his shirt.
“Of course, I think Eusebio is bound to give it to me because he’ll know all about me as I scored the goal at the other end .
“But, one of our players Brian Hamilton...when the game is over has the shirt off Eusebio’s back in just a second.

“So Eusebio has no alternative but to take Brian’s shirt and wrap it around his neck.
“I decide that I’m going to relieve him of his shorts. So I tap him on the shoulder and he looks round, and I just point to his shorts — he didn’t know immediately but I kept pointing to his shorts and he took the shorts off.
“By the time he gets into the dressing room he’s almost completely naked.
“But, I got those shorts and they were my beach wear for the next three or four years.”
