Weghorst: I want to stay

MAN UNITED v READING

- ■■Jeremy CROSS

WOUT Weghorst is on a mission to make himself a permanent home in the red half of Manchester.

The Holland international has joined Manchester United on loan until the end of the season from Burnley via Turkish side Besiktas.

Weghorst (right) got his campaign up and running with his first goal for Erik ten Hag’s men in Wednesday’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.

The striker is more interested in going to Wembley to help United try to win their first trophy since 2017 than heading back to Turf Moor.

The bosses at Old Trafford are expected to make a bid to sign England and Tottenham star Harry Kane in the summer.

But Weghorst insists he will do everything in his power to (right) persuade Ten Hag he can be the club’s No.9 and have a long-term future at United.

Weghorst said: “Of course I want to stay longer. I’ve seen the first week and how big the club is, in everything, the facilities, the club, even the quality in the team and the way we’re playing.

Work

“There’s a lot of quality in everything and that’s something you look to work in, to be in a winning atmosphere.

“I think the first week went well and it’s up to me to deliver and contribute.

I’m quite confident I can play a role in it.

“It was for a loan, but this is a massive club, so I will try to do everything as good as I can.

“The manager told me to deliver and help the team. We were looking for a target man. Now it’s up to me to take my chances.”

Weghorst reckons he is already on the same wavelength as Marcus Rashford, who scored his 10th goal in as many games at the City Ground.

He added: “He’s delivering every week and you see it in training. He’s got a lot of quality.

“He’s also a really good guy, a really open guy. He was the first one who came to me when I scored.

“We have a good relationship. You see the qualities he has.

“He’s extremely important for us, the way we play, he’s a massive part of it.”
