KILMACUD Crokes have lodged a counter-appeal over Sunday’s controversial All-Ireland Club final.

Crokes won the showpiece finale 1-11 to 1-9, but it has been shrouded in controversy ever since.

Video footage appears to show the Dublin club had 16 players on the field as a Glen 45 was being taken in the closing stages of the match.

Glen manager Malachy O’Rourke raised the issue with officials at the time.

However, the 45 was not retaken, even though Dara Mullin, who should have left the field when substituted for Conor Casey, was still situated near the goal-line as Glen pushed for a goal.

On Tuesday, Glen lodged an objection to the CCCC citing rule 6.44 after the GAA said they wouldn’t intervene on the issue unless forced to.

Lodged

Crokes are now understood to have lodged their own counter-appeal to the CCCC, which is expected to meet next week on the controversy.

There are a number of options should the CCCC side with Glen.

These include a fine, a replay, or awarding the game to the Derry side.

A replay had seemed the most likely outcome, though Crokes’ objection has added yet more confusion to the situation.

Earlier this week, reports suggested the Stillorgan club had no interest in a replay, with one report claiming they would be more likely to hand back the trophy rather than replay.

Should the game be replayed, another problem that arises is the lack of space in the calendar to play the game.

Added to that is the potential absence of key players, with many expected to go on holiday after a long club season.

With the National leagues kicking off this weekend, and an already congested fixture list existing, a rematch may have to be put on the back-burner for now.
