It was also a game where Celtic skipper McGregor made his 400th Celtic appearance. Postecoglou paid a glowing tribute to him and reckons it was important to mark it with a win. He also praised McGregor for helping to set the standard.

He admitted: “He was brilliant. I just said to the guys in the room and a couple of the other media guys that we are all pretty privileged to share a dressing room with him.

“The greatest compliment I can pay him is that he plays every game as if it’s his first. He plays every game as if he’s got everything to prove even though he’s done it all.”

“I know the window has been frustrating from the outside, but we’ve worked really hard to fight off a lot of competition and I’m really happy we’ve been able to sign Aidan for Cheltenham.”

The 23-year-old has previously played for Hearts, Queen’s Park, Dunfermline Athletic, Hartlepool United and Falkirk.

Tranmere Rovers and Colchester United were also keen on the prolific marksman.

NEWCASTLE signed Anthony Gordon from Everton reportedly for an initial €45 million last night after the 21-year-old submitted a formal transfer request.

Newcastle said Gordon has signed a longterm deal as the team bolsters its squad for its tilt at qualifying for the Champions League.

Suits

“I think the fan base and the city really suits me as a person, the way the team are playing under the manager (Eddie Howe) really suits me, and the club just look like they’re heading in the right direction,” Gordon said.

Gordon joined Everton’s academy at 11 and made his senior debut as a 16-year-old in a Europa League match in December 2017.

Howe described Gordon as a “top, top talent.”
