Guilty plea on way for stolen rental car in Norway trip

- ■■Louise WALSH

A NORWEGIAN engineer extradited for stealing a rental car hired in Dublin before driving it to his home country has dropped his bail application and agreed to stay in custody to prepare a signed guilty plea.

Bjorn Tveter (40), from Langelandsfjellet, Jessheim, Norway, appeared again at Dublin District Court yesterday to continue his bail application.

He is charged with stealing the Audi from a Dublin car rental firm and using false documentation to hire the vehicle on November 25, 2020.

Last Thursday, defence solicitor Tony Collier told the court he wanted to obtain documents from the Norwegian embassy to assist Mr Tveter.

Case

A DRIVING instructor has urged motorists whose cars have been damaged by potholes to seek compensation, as one county council paid out €60,000 in claims.

Andy McGuinniety bagged almost €100 from Meath County Council after his tyre blew when he struck a pothole near Navan while giving a driving lesson last month.

Now Andy is highlighting the recourse system for many drivers who may be able to claim for damage from potholes — once a previous attempt has been made by the council to repair the road.

Road

The Glaswegian, who lives in

Slane, runs iDrive Ireland School of Motoring and said the roads have worsened in the county in the last year.

Andy told how he had brought one student for a lesson in the Dean Hill area when they hit a pothole and blew a tyre.

He rang Meath County Council who put him in touch with Irish Public Body Insurance to make a claim.

“My tyre cost €110 euro and I got €93.50 back after they deducted wear and tear which is fair enough.”

Meath County Council paid out €59,598 to 250 claims in 2020 to 2022.
