Ross Hutch: ‘I’ll be different person to who I was before’

ABSENT FROM FUNERAL AS HE HAILS ‘DIAMOND’ MUM

- ■■Sean MURPHY

A SON of gangland figure The Monk’s sister-in-law promised his “diamond of a mother” at her funeral that he will be a “completely different person”.

Jane ‘Jenny’ Hutch Burke (66) died at home last week from a suspected heart attack.

Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch was not spotted at her funeral in Dublin yesterday while he remains behind bars to await the verdict of his Regency Hotel murder trial.

Also not seen was Ms Hutch Burke’s youngest son Ross Hutch (29) of Portland Place in Dublin north inner city.

He was arrested 17 months ago in August 2021 and remanded in custody, charged with allegedly slashing the face of an ex-partner’s boyfriend with a knife.

His mother was pronounced dead on January 27 after gardai were called to her home at Portland Place when a concerned relative forced entry and found her body.

She was discovered just 24 hours after a 13-week murder trial of Gerry Hutch ended at the Special Criminal Court.

Mourners in Our Lady of Lourdes Church on Sean McDermott Street in Dublin heard a letter read from Ms Hutch Burke’s son Ross.

Goodbye

It said: “Well, ma, I never thought I’d be saying my last goodbye in a letter.

“It’s unbelievable that I’ll never get to see you again. You’ve been in my head every day for the past 17 months.

“I think about you every day and the pain you were going through. We weren’t ever able to speak on the phone because of the pain.

“Ma, you are my world, my life, my everything. You’re a diamond and the best mother ever to me and the boys.

“You gave us everything and brought us everywhere. You never said no to me for anything we asked for.

“For me and the boys, you were the best at what you did. We wanted for nothing. Now I’m crying, writing this letter to you, ma.

“I just cannot believe you’re gone. My heart is shattered in a million pieces. I’m after losing my one and only diamond of a mother.

“Ma, I promise you, when I come home that I will be there for your son, and my brother, Gavin.

“I will not let you down. I know you will be there as a guardian angel, looking over us, and I will make you proud when I get home.

“I will be a completely different person to who I was in the past. It’s just not registered that you’re gone.”

Mr Hutch added: “Until we meet again, I love you.”

Ross’s letter followed a poignant slideshow of touching moments from throughout his mother’s life that was shown to mourners.

The mourners in Our Lady of Lourdes Church heard that Ms Hutch Burke will be missed terribly by those who loved her.

Parish priest Fr Michael Casey said: “Jane’s death, or Jenny as she was fondly known, plunged the community into sadness.

“We gather to give thanks for her life.”

He added: “Jenny is now in that place of peace and rest.”

Ms Hutch Burke’s death was the latest in a series of sadness for her family.

Shot

Her husband Eddie Hutch Snr was 59 when he was shot dead on February 8, 2016, just three days after the Regency Hotel killing of David Byrne (33).

Detectives believe Eddie was murdered by gunmen in his north-inner city home as part of the Hutch/Kinahan gangland feud.

The couple had separated years before his death.

Gardai and prison chiefs were believed to oppose release of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch for yesterday’s funeral.
