Pointless Dubs need victories

- ■■Karl O’KANE

DEAN ROCK says it’s imperative that Dublin stay in Division 1.

The pressure is on Dessie Farrell’s (inset) side, who prop up the table, ahead of this weekend’s clash with Roscommon at Croke Park.

Dublin are the only side without a point after two games, and another defeat would leave them staring relegation in the face for the second time in three years.

Four teams in the eight team group have a worse points difference than

Dublin, with

Farrell’s side losing both their games against Monaghan and Mayo - by a single point.

So it’s not all doom and gloom but the All-Ireland champions could do with putting points on the board.

Recently retired Rock said: “It certainly would have hit us hard when we did get relegated that year. Defeats don’t do anyone any good.

Turn

“I understand it’s the league but you learn a lot about lads in the league, individually and collectively.

“And of course you’ve got time then to turn things around if the league doesn’t go well for you.

“I think it’s very important to pick up a good couple of wins and the lads will certainly be quite annoyed and frustrated over the first two games after losing both by a point.

“In another season or on another day, those two games could have went the way of Dublin.

“They could be sitting on top of the table at the moment with four points and everything looks a lot different.”

Dublin won the All-Ireland from Division 2 last year so relegation wouldn’t be the end of the world,

But Rock says: “I think staying in Division 1 will be imperative.”
