accent on a prolific striker as the spear-tip of an aggressive press, should suit English football’s tenacity.

And when they are fit, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze will be the Messi and Ronaldo in Glasner’s grand design.

Reign

Speaking during his reign at Frankfurt, who also reached the knockout stages of last season’s Champions League after progressing from the same group as Tottenham, he said: “Attitude is very important to me.

“It doesn’t have to be perfect every day, but I want to feel with every player that he is giving everything.

“Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been playing at the top level for more than 20 years now and, if you include internationals, they play over 60 matches a year.

“They put in a lot of effort and are always willing because they love football so much. That passion is the greatest thing you can have.”

Glasner cites Jurgen Klopp as the biggest influence on his coaching style, with an honourable mention for ex-Manchester United interim caretaker Ralf Rangnick.

His playing style has been compared with Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham, Thomas Frank at Brentford and his mentor Rangnick at Red Bull Salzburg.

Higher

Significantly, every club he has coached has finished higher in the table than the previous season, and each season since 2017, until his sabbatical this year, his teams qualified for Europe.

SEAMUS Coleman has been awarded the Everton Heritage Society’s Dixie Dean Memorial Trophy.

The annual honour, named after legendary Toffees star Dean – who also lined out for Coleman’s former club Sligo Rovers – was presented to the Donegalman by 1995 FA Cup-winning captain Dave Watson.

Everton greats to have received the award include Howard Kendall, Colin Harvey, Joe Royle, Graeme Sharp and Duncan Ferguson.

Every year the Heritage Society selects a recipient who embodies the qualities shown by Dean.

Coleman recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of his arrival from Sligo Rovers by overtaking Tim Howard as the club’s record Premier League appearance holder.

He told the Everton Heritage Society: “It’s a massive honour to be Everton captain. I suppose I never thought it would happen, when I was coming over here and trying to get into the team.

“As time goes on, you realise how big the club is and the history of the club.

Chasing

“You realise what the likes of Dave (Watson) and the other lads have done at the club. I’ve been chasing that dream for a long time.

“It’s something I don’t want to give up on. I think regardless of winning something or not, I think Everton means so much.

“I always try to give 100 per cent. I just love putting on that blue shirt and representing Everton Football Club.”

Coleman paid tribute to the supporters who held aloft a giant banner at a recent game against Aston Villa which read ‘15 years of Seamus’.

“I’m really thankful. It’s great because I suppose the fans have recognised that whether I play well or play badly, I always give 100 per cent,” he said.

“They really took to me and I’m really grateful for that. As long as I’m here, I’ll continue doing my best for Everton Football Club.

“For me, that’s the most important part – not individual performances or individual stats, it’s Everton Football Club, first and foremost, and that’s all that matters to me.

“Us as players really appreciate the fan support as well because it’s been tough with what’s happened, but we’re still fighting.”
