Alli’s talk offered up hope

Alli admits he was “overwhelme­d” by the response to his emotional interview in which he confronted mental health issues relating to his troubled childhood.

Last summer Alli (28) revealed he had been sexually abused as a six-yearold and was selling drugs at eight, leading to his psychologi­cal problems.

He also opened up about a sleeping pill addiction which led to a stay at a rehab clinic.

The footballer revealed to Monday Night Football on Sky Sports: “When I did the interview I said if I helped one person that’s all I needed.

“I had to do it for my own reasons, but if it helped one person that is all I wanted from it and the reaction and support I got was definitely overwhelmi­ng.

“But it was amazing to see how many people it did help and I’m definitely very proud of it.”

Alli, who has not played since a loan spell at Besiktas was cut short in February last year due to a hip problem and groin issue, said going public with his problems was part of a healing process. a big part of where my finances go.”

A female Donegal student, 18 to 22 age bracket expressed her financial worries about the future.

She said: “As a student you just get by, but you have this idea that once you get into the working world, it will all change and you will have money and be able to live comfortabl­y. But the reality is it’s just not like that.”

The NYCI report has recommende­d tackling the housing crisis via rent caps, and increasing social and affordable housing supply.
