HE’S just landed his first No1 single but Hozier feared his career was over due to mental health struggles.

The Too Sweet hitmaker felt like he would never write another song because the pandemic hit him hard.

Hozier, who landed his first hit Take Me To The Church in 2013, shared: “I hit this kind of wall where I couldn’t move forward and I felt I’d written my very last song.

“I just slowed down in all forms and I felt no roots, I saw no ability to write.

“Any attempt to make it seemed impossible.

Write

“I also fully believed - and this is the funny thing about when you’re in that mindset - I fully beloved that I did not know how to write a song despite all the evidence against it.

“I was like, ‘oh no I just don’t know how to do this’.”

The Irish star, real name Andrew, eventually realised he needed to start “tending to myself ”.

He explained: “I had a very largely combative relationship with myself, so I was absolutely at war with myself constantly.

“It’s like I couldn’t have a thought without an opposing thought, you know, so it’s like my brain was kind of split in two.”

Andrew, who meditates, said: “You could be on stage in the middle of a song...I’m not present in that...(Instead) you’re doing laundry lists in your head while you’re in the middle of singing a song.”

Hozier has been “taken aback” by the success of Too Sweet, and is enjoying it more than when he landed his first hit.

He revealed: “I could maybe have done with patting myself on the back once.

“Because it was the first song I ever released, and it was a song I threw together in my parents’ attic. Maybe there was a part of me that felt like, ‘I have earned this? Have I been doing this for ten years?’”
