Drogheda full value as Sligo fall short

- by Barry LANDY

FRANTZ PIERROT and Aaron McNally struck goals in the second half as Drogheda picked up a long-awaited win.

United had not tasted victory since a home win over Bohemians at the start of March.

Haitian striker Pierrot, who netted his first goal against Derry two weeks ago, hit the net again from the penalty spot late on. Then sub McNally produced a brilliant finish to confirm the points with minutes remaining.

Sligo had led as early as the sixth minute through Will Fitzgerald but Drogheda were full value for the win.

The hosts levelled through a Darragh Markey stunner from 20 yards.

Pierrot and teen Warren Davis were involved in the buildup but it was Markey who found the top corner.

Denied

He almost had a second but Oliver

Denham superbly denied him by diving in front of a shot heading for the net.

Sligo’s early season form has evaporated. They are now without a win in five games.

Skipper Niall Morahan gave away the penalty which lead to Drogs’ lead goal.

He clumsily tripped up Luke Heeney and Pierrot did the business from 12 yards.

Ed McGinty was sent the wrong way.

There was time for McNally, a second half replacement, to score a brilliant third to confirm victory.

The Bit O’Red didn’t trouble home stopper Jethren Barr at all in the second half.

Without Max Mata, Fabrice Hartmann and Simon Power, they lacked creativity in the final third as Drogheda profited. DROGHEDA UNITED: Barr 6; Heeney 7, Keaney 6, Cann 7, Kane 7;
