Salah still main man at Anfield

- With CHRIS McKENNA

MO SALAH will go down as one of Liverpool’s greatest players.

There’s little doubt that if you were to compile a list of the Reds’ best-ever starting XI only a fool would leave out the Egyptian.

So it appears weird that some are now saying he’s part of the reason their title challenge has hit the skids — or even questioning his brilliance.

The reason Liverpool are where they are this season is a lot down to Salah.

Injury

Yes, his form has dipped in recent weeks and he’s looked way off his best since his return from a hamstring injury picked up at the Africa Cup of

Nations.

He’d scored

18 goals before he headed to the tournament and suffered the muscle problem.

OFF THE BOIL: Mo Salah

Salah is well below his best, with five since his return to fitness, and he’s not delivered those match-winning moments in tight games he has been so good at during his time at Anfield.

But he’s also put chances on a plate for the likes of Darwin Nunez which have been wasted at crucial moments in games against Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Everton.

Those now look to have cost the Reds in the title race.

All this has led to the call that the club should cash in on Salah now after they turned down €170m for him last summer from Saudi Arabia.

Decision

It is no doubt a big decision for incoming boss Arne Slot to make with just 12 months remaining on Salah’s contract.

But if the Reds were to agree to sell the Egyptian, then they better have a good plan to replace him because they’d be much worse off than third with four games to go without him. Salah may not be at his best but he’s still by far the best Liverpool have. It’s not long ago that Jurgen Klopp was waxing lyrical about how the striker doesn’t have the body or age of a 31 year old and can play on for many years to come.

It’s a case of careful what you wish for for Liverpool fans.
