Dog man’s been to the waggy tailor

- ■■Ewan GLEADOW

THE man-dog who spent €14,000 on a costume to turn into a border collie has splashed out on another outfit.

Known as Toco, he has amassed an army of online fans as he charts his barking-mad life as a pooch in Japan.

And now he has shown off his new ultrarealistic Alaskan Malamute breed costume, which comes with a moveable mouth and wagging tail.

Toco was seen fetching a frisbee and peeking out from behind a tree in the latest video on his YouTube channel.

And he wrote on X: “I ended up ordering another costume to fulfil my dream of becoming an animal!”

Toco appeared ecstatic with his new outfit and thanked the suit creator.

He added: “This time, a new Alaskan Malamute costume was created by Zeppet! It is very cute! Thank you very much!”

But his attempts to make friends with real mutts haven’t gone well.

Footage shows two dogs standing frozen in fear when meeting him, before wandering off.

THE day before the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, Ayrton Senna had been rocked by the death of Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger (33) when his car hit a wall during qualifying at Imola.

Senna’s pal, neurosurgeon Sid Watkins suggested: “Why don’t you quit and we’ll just go fishing?”

The tearful star replied that he couldn’t give up the sport he loved.

The next day Sid was battling to save Senna’s life when the 34-year-old crashed at 145mph after taking a bend while leading the pack.

His head injuries proved too catastrophic to come back from.

Both driver error and a mechanical fault have since been blamed for the crash, but new F1 safety measures were later introduced.

There’s only been one on-track death in the championship since – Frenchman Jules Bianchi, who suffered fatal brain injuries in a crash at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.

THE Belgian Grand Prix of 1960 saw British driver Chris Bristow’s car leave the track throwing the 22-year-old from it and leaving his body decapitated by barbed wire in a field.

Just five laps later Alan Stacey (26) was hit in the face by a bird while travelling at 120mph in his Lotus and crashed just 100ft away from Bristow’s car, dying instantly.

Another eerie echo came in 1973 when Roger Williamson (25) became trapped and died in his burning car at the Dutch Grand Prix, the same race where countryman Piers Courage (28) had died in an inferno in 1970.

IRONICALLY, it was a car accident on an ordinary road that would take the life of speed king Mike Hawthorn, who became the first British world champion in 1958, before sensationally quitting racing.

He perished three months later on January 22, 1959, in a smash on the A3 Guildford bypass in Surrey.

PETER Collins was on a high after winning the British Grand Prix in 1958 but died only a few weeks later in a terrifying crash during the German Grand Prix.

The Brit’s Ferrari hit a ditch on the Nürburgring course, causing it to flip into the air and land upside down, before bursting into flames.

Mike’s Jaguar clipped a bollard while overtaking a friend’s car and careered off the carriageway.

The 29-year-old died instantly from head injuries.

Driver error, mechanical failures on a wet road or a possible blackout from kidney failure have all been put forward as causes of the accident, which remains a mystery.

Another Brit, double F1 champion, Jim Clark (32), would die after his car left the track in a Formula Two race in Germany after his car spun off the track into woodland.
