Charolais hits €7,000 jackpot
A Mayo breeder secured the top price at the Charolais Society Show and Sales, reports Limousin winner sells for €11,300
ACROSSMOLINA breeder couldn’t believe his luck when the bidding for his home bred bull, Crossmolina Logan, soared to €7,000 before the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer at the Irish Charolais Society Show and Sale at GVM Mart, Tullamore on Saturday afternoon.
“I just can’t believe it” said breeder Alan Wood as auctioneer, Tom Cox, called for a round of applause after the June 2015 born bull, the winner of his class, had become the clear price topper of the sale.
The winning bidder was Jim Hoare, who was determined to secure the bull for his herd at Maynooth.
The bull was bred out of Crossmolina Agnes by the sire, Grimaldi.
The price leader was the forerunner to a flurry of bidding during which an average of €4,800 was paid for 12 lots.
The overall sale average was €3,550 for the clearance of 75pc.
Show judge, Pat McClean (Donegal) selected 14-month-old Bostonia Lorenzo as Champion of Show. Exhibited by Brendan and Greg Feeney, Scurmore, Enniscrone, Co Sligo, the winner was the Reserve Champion at the National Calf Show and sold for €5,100.
The champion is out of Maerdy Entry and by the sire, Elgin Davinci.
The Reserve Championship was awarded to James Phelan’s Looby Larson from Garryhill, Bagenalstown and bred out of Looby Fricker by Goldstar Echo.
The second highest price was paid for Aidan Farrell’s Williamstown Liam from Moate with the hammer falling at €5,500 for the first prize winner in his class.
He was following in the footsteps of Williamstown Jude, the 14-month-old bull from the herd, judged overall Champion of the Show last year and the top price bull on the day when he sold for €6,400 for export to NI.
Aidan was also one of three breeders who received the third highest price of €5,000, which he received for Williamstown Lance, while Michael G Kavanagh, Oldcastle, and John Fleury, Birr, sold Ballinvalley Luiz and Drumcullen Lionel respectively at the same price. SIXTEEN-MONTH-OLD Derrygullinane Kingbull was the price topper at the Irish Limousin Society Annual October Premier Show and Sale Roscrea Mart where he sold for €11,300 for export to the Pabo herd of WP Hughes & Son, Fferam Gyd, Anglesey.
Exhibited by Gerry Walshfrom Ballina, the June 2015 Overall Limousin Male Champion and Reserve Overall Champion at the International Limousin Congress Show last August was judged Senior Champion of the Show.
He is out of the dam Derrygullinane Elsia Et and by the sire, Marchermore Augustus and has a muscle score of 143 and a skeletal score of 123. He has a five-star rating in Terminal index of €147 and a four-star Replacement index of €86.
