Farm model show raises €10k to help Adam walk

FARM model collectors from across the county have come together to help a little boy from Louth get back on his feet.

Last month, the second annual Farm Model Show in aid of ‘Adam’s Wish To Walk’, a local charity, raised €3,500 for Adam Marmion, from Ardee.

The bubbly five-year-old, described as a “great character” by the people of the community, has myelomeningocele – a type of Spina Bifida. The birth defect is caused by the backbone and spinal canal not closing before birth.

Although Adam is currently unable to walk as a result of the condition, his spirits remain high thanks to the support of neighbours, friends and loved ones, committed to making Adam’s dream a reality.

Over the last two years, the community, and supporters from further afield, have raised almost €10,000 to help his parents, Catriona and Gary, cover the costs of intense and vital physiotherapy in Newry for their son as he embarks on his primary education.

The bumper Christmas show, which took place at Ardee Parish Centre, featured some of the country’s very best toy farm displays including top of the range authentic scale models from John Deere, Fendt, Massey Ferguson, Ford and New Holland. Plus, some individually crafted Scratchbuilt items.

Organiser Mark Carroll said model collectors, including some farmers, were delighted to help out and exhibit their lucrative collections that they’ve been perfecting for decades.

“I’ve seen the crowds that go to these shows nationwide and I decided to give it a go. Anything raised is better than not raising anything at all.”

“A few hundred turned up on the day, the children and the bigger kids loved it. When you see the work and the detail you realise they are actually not toys, it’s an art,” he said.

Adam was on hand to make sure everybody was enjoying the day.

“Adam was there for the whole day from the minute the doors opened. He was meant to go to his granny’s to have a wee break but he didn’t want to go, he was having so much fun.”

“He was out looking at all the toy tractors and chatting to people and he was in the kitchen helping the ladies with teas, coffees and general management,” he jests.

“We do it for Adam, he is a real character very happy and out going and he’s mad to get out and get going himself. He’s big into sport, he loves Aston Villa, and he’s a big fan of rugby and GAA. We’re delighted to play any part that we can,” he said.
