Westmeath farm hits the bullseye
YOU don’t expect to find hurling clubs or dairy farms on the Meath-Westmeath border. I found both at Archerstown, Co Westmeath; on my way to visit a 55ac dairy farm I passed the local Brownstown Hurling Club and a pub called ‘The Hurler’s Rest’.
The 55ac residential farm is located at Archerstown, 6km from Delvin Mart and 6km from Clonmellon and comes to the market with a guide price of €600,000. Situated amid the best of ground this working dairy farm is in the top condition with three big, south-facing fields divided into paddocks fenced with electric fencing and serviced by a central roadway and water.
The place has been run as part of a partnership over the last number of years and is well farmed. Much of the land has been reseeded and the external boundaries have decent hedgerow.
Reached by its own avenue the property has frontage on to a cul-de sac and is home to series of good farm buildings that include a four-bay slatted shed, a three column barn with 53 cubicles and an 8-unit milking machine in a 16-cow milking parlour along with dairy facilities and a bulk tank. Padraic Murtagh of selling agents James L Murtagh Mullingar says there is good interest in the holding from across the board but he obviously expects the keenest interest to come from the dairy side of the industry.
“It would make a fine basis for a new milking enterprise,” he said, “or an excellent out farm for a current dairy operation, it has everything.”
It will be sold at auction at the Greville Arms, Mullingar at 3pm on June 30.
