Five smaller SUVs that can still pack a serious punch

-

FORD KUGA

Zetec versions with 140bhp were most popular until the Titanium model took over in 2016. The model changed in 2013, but the old 2012s still look well. The 2.0-litre diesel engine is sweet as a nut.

HONDA CR-V

If you need to tow, then buy a used 2.2-litre diesel version. The new model arrived in 2013 but four-wheel drive models were made obsolete by the 1.6-litre arriving in 2015. If the CR-V is for family use only then go for a 1.6-litre diesel ES model.

MAZDA CX-5

This has just been refreshed so there is finally some decent availability on the used market. Opt for the Executive SE version for the best blend of style and kit. Great 2.2-litre diesel engine that will go and go.

TOYOTA RAV4

Two-wheel drive Luna models are most common but there are some four-wheel drive versions, mainly from 2013 to 2015. Lots of farming families like and trust Toyota and the dealer network is extensive and competitive so you should fare well when trading a Rav4 back in.

VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN

Having just been renewed, the Tiguan has loads of choice on the used market. Run-out models from 2015 and 2016 came in ‘Sport’ trim. Get one of those if you can as it is loaded with goodies. Otherwise, be happy to settle for the L&L (Life and Leisure) version. The 2.0-litre diesel engine is plenty peppy for on-road family use.
