Former IFA man’s holding just shy of €1m
A 158AC farm straddling the Meath Border with Cavan at Glanadara, Tierworker, sold at auction last week in seven lots making a total of €909,000.
Spread out between Bailieborough and Kingscourt on Loughanleagh Mountain, the holding originally belonged to legendary NFA and IFA man Phil Reilly.
Reilly was a lifelong farming activist, taking part in the 1965 to 1967 Farmers Rights Campaign and was among those jailed for refusing to pay court fines. He continued to be active in farming politics and passed away on March 8, 2017.
The land is described by Navan auctioneer John V Farrelly as a mixture of upland and lower ground suitable for drystock or sheep and also suitable for forestry or renewable energy. It has plenty of access with good road frontage to many of the plots.
At auction, the place was offered in seven lots and there were two local bidders on every lot. The first of 35ac made €220,000, the second 28ac lot was sold for €137,000, while a 9ac parcel made €45,000. A 15ac piece was sold for €112,000 and 47ac made €290,000. A 21ac portion made €90,000, while a small parcel of 1.61ac made the best per acre price of the day at €15,000.
According to the auctioneer, the major part of the Reilly home farm is being sold at auction later in the month, while it is expected the homestead and 92ac will be brought to auction in spring 2018.
At Loughnavalley in Westmeath, a residential 40ac farm made €10,000/ac when it sold under the hammer for €400,000. Located beside the village of Loughnavalley, the farm is 17.7km from Mullingar. The dwelling is an extensive bungalow with four bedrooms, along with a self contained annex or ‘granny’ f lat with two bedrooms. A substantial farmyard contains an extensive range of farm buildings and the land is described by Paul Murtagh of Murtagh Bros auctioneers as excellent quality.
