Five-star Charolais Tullaghan McGregor reaches €3,500

-

A MAY 2016 born bull was the Charolais price topper at the first pedigree sale of the season for the breed at the Showgrounds, Carrick-on-Shannon when he sold for €3,500.

Five stars on Terminal Index within the breed and across all breeds, Tullaghan McGregor was exhibited by Michael Daly, Tullaghan, Leitrim and judged Reserve Champion of the breed at the earlier judging.

He was bred by the wellknown Charolais sire, Doonally New, and out of the home-bred dam, Tullaghan Fausta. The bull has a three star replacement rating within the breed with reliability of 47pc but is rated as a one star across all breeds.

The breed Championship of the Show was awarded to Coolembley Major, bred and exhibited by Martin Herity, Ballineden, Cloghboley, Drumcliffe, Co Sligo.

Born in October 2016, the five and four star bull, respectively for Terminal and Replacement indices, the progeny of Alwent Goldbar out of the home-bred dam, Coolembley, Gabbie, he sold for €3,300, the second highest price recorded for the breed at the sale.

The multi-breed sale was run by the Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society Ltd at their well laid out sale centre and the entries for the opening sale of 2018 were mainly from herds in the surrounding counties.

The weather difficulties being experienced on farms, and the on-going shortage of fodder in the region had a muting effect on demand which was described as “reasonable” for the quality bulls.

In general the top sales ranged between €2,000 and €3,200.

Third highest price was €3,200 received by Peter Logan, Hyde Street, Mohill for Hydestreet Mahongy, an April 2016 born son of Lisnagre Hansome and out of the dam, Hydestreet Velvet.

Padraig Farrell, Fardrum, Athlone received €3,100 for Cavehill McGregor, a 17-month-old son of Doonally Nicefor out of Boyannagh Ippy.

Two Co Leitrim breeders each received €2,700 when Vincent McBrien , Camber, Corriga sold Camber Mac, sired by Pirate and Regina McNabola, Drumsna sold Drumsna Major, sired by Cavelands Fenian at similar prices.
