Following in Red Pepper’s footsteps

Lisduff Red Pats, the full brother of last year’s sale topper, delivers for Leo McEnroe’s herd by setting the top price among red Angus at Mid Tipperary Mart, reports Martin Ryan

A FULL brother to the 2017 price topper Red Pepper has delivered again for Leo McEnroe’s Lisduff Angus herd at the annual production sale.

Lisduff Red Pats topped the trade for the red Angus and recorded the second highest overall price when sold for €4,000 at Mid Tipperary Mart at Thurles where the stock from the Virginia, Co Cavan herd met with strong demand once again although the prices paid failed to match last year’s record.

Lisduff Red Pepper, the 18-month-old by the sire Lanigan Red Krackerjack, achieved the highest price of the day in 2017 before being knocked down to the South Eastern Cattle Breeding Station, Dovea AI, Thurles for €8,000. He was bred from the dam Killanley Red Petal and became one of the highest price red Angus bulls in the country last year.

September 2016-born Lisduff Red Pat S 1470 is by the same sire and dam, and is five star for both terminal and replacement indices with €147 value for replacement, being five star both within breed and across all breeds. There were 10 “red” Aberdeen Angus bulls among the entry of 42 bulls, varying from 11 months to two years old, on offer from the herd.

Highest overall price at the sale was achieved by Lisduff Red Kat S 1466 which sold for €4,500. The August 2016-born bull was by the same sire, Lanigan Red Krackerjack, and out of the dam Gannon Red King Princess.

Foundation stock

He is also a five star under both terminal and replacement indices and has a euro-star value of €159 for replacement and five star for carcass weight.

Sharing the second highest price at €4,000 was 13-monthold Lisduff Big Boy, bred from Mogeely Josh (s) and Cashelane Babette (d) with five-star terminal and three-star replacement indices within the breed.

Lisduff Red Lancer S1429, a May 2016-born bull, sold for €3,300, while Lisduff Red Bomber S 1433 sold for €3,250 and two bulls sold for €3,200 each, Lisduff Red Luke S 1425 and Lisduff Red Larry S 1424. They were all bred from the sire Lanigan Red Krackerjack.

The overall average for the sale was €3,300, which was back a shade on 2017, and clearance was 66pc.

Angus breeding on the farm goes back to the 1940s when the Angus was introduced by Leo’s father, Bartle McEnroe, and the foundation stock have continued to make a big input to developing the bloodlines which the herd is now reaping the benefit of.

“The advantage is they are very good milkers crossed with red genes, eg lim or sim, and you will get red animals that make outstanding mothers for the suckler herd,” says Leo of the red Angus.
