Buyers ready to swoop for equestrian holding

- JIM O’BRIEN

AMONG the fine equestrian properties for sale at the moment is Hawkfield House near Newbridge in Co Kildare. The residential property with extensive facilities and an impressive equestrian pedigree is coming to auction with a guide price of €1.3m.

Located less than 3km from Newbridge, the place is also 3km from the M7 motorway at Junction 12, 6km from the M9 and 40km from Dublin.

Owned by Ned and Liz O’Flynn, two prominent Galway-based equestrian veterinary surgeons, the property has an impressive track record in producing successful horses. Stable stars included Olympic gold winner ‘Custom Made’ and the place has also produced winners for the Badminton 5 Star and Kentucky Rolex events.

The O’Flynns are reluctantly selling Hawkfield to concentrate their efforts on their home base at Oranmore. The house is a dormer build approached from a recessed entrance via a 350m avenue lined with trees.

The equestrian facilities are laid out over two yards with an upper yard containing two boxes and a tack room, while the lower yard has 12 boxes, a feed room and a toilet along with a three-column haybarn with double lean-to on a concrete base and a threespan machinery shed.

Other equestrian facilities include an all-weather sand arena measuring 60m x 30m. Clive Kavanagh of Jordan Auctioneers describes the facilities as somewhat dated but very functional.

The land, extending to 93ac, has 520m of road frontage on to the Milltown road and includes 6ac in turbary rights located away from the main farm. The land is suitable for any farming enterprise and at present half of the acreage is in tillage and the other half in grass.

Aside from the turbary the property is all in one rectangular block, bisected by the entrance avenue and a farm roadway that gives access to all the paddocks. Water is piped to all sections and some gravel deposits are to be found on the property.

According to Mr Kavanagh, Hawkfield is a lovely property with oodles of potential, especially for someone trading up or starting out in the equestrian business. The place will be sold at auction at the Keadeen Hotel, Newbridge at 3pm on Thursday, July 5.
