MEP PAYS VISIT TO REPRIEVED COW

- Sarah Collins

PENKA, the pregnant Bulgarian cow whose life was saved from an EU death sentence last week, met one of her saviours. Campaigning UK MEP John Flack visited her when he was in Bulgaria on business last week.

Penka last month wandered over the border from Bulgaria into neighbouring Serbia, which is not a member of the EU. The EU initially ruled she should be killed over health and safety concerns, but had a change of heart after a massive public campaign called for her to be spared.

At her hilltop pasture near the village of Kopilovtsi, the Tory MEP gave her a pat and fed her some of her favourite treats — apples and corn. “Penka was probably wondering what all the fuss was about, but it was good to see her looking so healthy and happy,” Mr Flack said.
