While numbers were not overly big, strong demand made for a good trade with the best of the continenta­l bullocks making up to €800 with the €1/kg.

Hereford and Angus stores sold from €350-550 over the €1/kg, while Friesian stores averaged €280-400 over their weight. Hereford and Angus heifers made from €300-465 over the weight. Friesian cross bulls averaged €10-40/hd, with better types making up to €80/hd. Hereford and Angus bulls sold from €100-280/ hd, with Hereford and Angus heifer calves seeing €80-240/ hd. Continenta­l bulls made from €160-300/hd, while continenta­l heifers sold from €100-240/hd.

Sixmilebri­dge

Although numbers were reduced here due to the weather, trade bounded along very nicely. Sean Ryan averaged his beef heifers from €2.00-2.45/kg. On the bullock side he quoted five 525kg Limousins at €1,310/hd, almost €2.50/ kg. Prices for suckler stock saw a Limousin cow with a three-week-old calf at foot make €1,800, while an Aubrac heifer in-calf to a Limousin sold for €1,760.

Barney O’Connell’s regular mart report for last week were a good number relating to a special dairy entry. “We had 42 exceptiona­l heifers and cows from one man that drew serious money,” he said.

This “partial dispersal” sale saw the more commercial type, first calved heifer average from €1,400-1,600/ hd, while those with better bloodlines sold from €2,0002,400/hd. Three-year-old calved cows also cracked on

well with prices ranging from €1,800-2,400/hd.

Dingle

Friesian bulls sold from €80-100/hd, with Angus and Hereford types averaging €180-240/hd, with better fleshed types making up to €320/hd.

Ballinrobe

Despite the bad weather, numbers held up well here as did prices.

Samples from the bullock ring included a 6015kg Angus who made €2.34/kg with a 590kg Limousin X made €2.36/kg, while a 450kg Charolais X sold for €2.58/kg.

Among the best of the heifers were a 600kg Limousin who sold for €2.34/kg, a 430kg Charolais at €2.47/ kg and a 355kg Salers X at €2.54/kg. Best of the heifer weanlings was a 265kg Charolais that sold for €3.02/ kg.

Nenagh

Michael Harty reckons that the recent spell of cold and very wet weather has helped reduce mart numbers.

“From now on men buying will want to go to grass, meaning those selling are waiting until the weather settles.”

On the prices front, a very strong cull cow trade saw the better animal make from €2.00-2.10/kg.

Best of the bullocks were a couple of batches of 570580kg Charolais stock that sold from €1,270-1,280/hd. Seven 300kg Angus with two moves made €680/hd.

Carraigall­en

A good turnout of weanling stock saw very solid averages across all divisions.

Starting with the heifers prices in the 150-300kg division, prices averaged €2.96/kg with a 296kg Charolais X claiming top spot on €3.18/kg. The 300-400kg section averaged €2.60/kg.
