Heartbreak for Burnett

DEREK BURNETT agonisingl­y missed out on the semi-finals of the shooting trap contest by just two points in Baku yesterday.

The top six qualified for the semifinal. Burnett had fired well on Tuesday’s day one of qualificat­ion for the later stages.

Of his three rounds, the Longford man landed two top marks of 25 and a 23.

In the first of the two final rounds during yesterday’s day two, Burnett missed the maximum, hitting a 24 marker, requiring a final shot of 25; he shot 23, leaving him just two points short.

It was a heartbreak­ing finish for the Longford man, who aims to qualify for the Rio Olympics next summer – which would be his fifth Games. European Games Live, Setanta, from 4.55
