Corbett family upset at claim Jason planned to stay in US
THE family of slain Limerick man Jason Corbett have dismissed claims made by relatives of his second wife that he planned to stay in the US permanently.
Molly Martens Corbett (31) is a person of interest in a police investigation into Mr Corbett’s (39) death last month.
She was also involved in a lengthy custody battle over Mr Corbett’s children Jack (10) and Sarah (8).
Her uncle, Michael Earnest, has said that Mr Corbett had applied for residency in the US, so that he could stay there with his children.
“The children had moved with their father and Molly in 2011,” said Mr Earnest.
“Jason applied for a work visa and could have stayed here indefinitely.
“Typically, applying for permanent residency status is the first step that you would take towards staying indefinitely.”
This is denied by Mr Corbett’s brother John. Last night, he said his family were upset by claims made by the Martens family.
He said the family had also sent Ms Martens a legal letter, asking her to refrain from using images of the children on Facebook.
“Jack and Sarah’s legal resident status or green card application was deliberately done through Jason’s job specifically to protect the kids,” he said.
“He could have easily done it through Molly’s family and was under tremendous pressure from them all to agree,” he added.
John said that Jason did not apply for residency with the Martens family because of concerns he held that his children would not be returned to Ireland in the event of something happening to him.
Jason’s first wife and the mother of the children, Mags Corbett, died of an asthma attack in 2006 when Sarah was just 12 weeks old.
“Jason never entertained the idea of making his children dual American/Irish citizens as Mr Michael Earnest stated,” added John.
