‘INTER-COUNTY WINDOW’ NEARS END FOR KENNY

MATTIE KENNY hasn’t ruled out a possible tilt at inter-county management after leading Cuala to All-Ireland club SHC honours, but the Galway native believes he’s coming towards the end of that “window of opportunity”.

The Dalkey side strode to victory over Ballyea in Croke Park yesterday, becoming the first side from the capital to claim an AllIreland club SHC title, and Kenny admits his future is unknown as he and the club will reassess in good time.

After being overlooked for the Galway senior hurling job in favour of Micheál Donoghue, following Anthony Cunningham’s resignation at the end of the 2015 season, Kenny (pictured) feels his chance may have passed.

“I was told if we lost not to come back next week! Where we go from now, we will look at it in maybe a week’s time,” Kenny said. “I am a proud Galway man and I was with Galway for a number of years. The position in Galway came up and I applied and I was unsuccessful.

“So time moves on. There’s a window for everybody and I’m coming to the end of that window now.

“The last year we’ve been eating and drinking Cuala hurling and this is Cuala’s time. I’m proud to be associated with them.”

Elsewhere, Cavan captain Killian Clarke and ace attacker Seanie Johnston return to Mattie McGleenan’s side for tomorrow’s Allianz FL Division 1 meeting with Mayo in Castlebar.

The Breffni men suffered their third defeat of the campaign against Tyrone in last weekend’s re-fixture and desperately need a win to ease their relegation worries as they sit at the foot of the table alongside a struggling Roscommon outfit.
