3.30 Grade One Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase 3m2f70yds

AS expected, they went a nice gallop here. Initially Bristol De Mai was making the speed but it was soon disputed by Champagne West and Native River, both of which jumped nicely. Djakadam got into a beautiful rhythm in third and it was clear from a long, long way from home that he would have no excuses.

SizingJohn was ridden to get the trip but never too far out of his ground. Cue Card, which was ridden patiently, did not give the impression at any stage that he was going to prevail, and he fell at the third-last, just like last year but not moving as easily it seemed 12 months on. He also had a slightly messy trip beforehand.

Sizing John was cantering for most of the race, but Djakadam had taken the lead at this stage. He edged ahead of Native River, but Native River would not go away, and Minella Rocco began to edge closer to the main runners too. Djakadam was untidy two out, clattering into the obstacle.

Djakadam was challenged by Sizing Gold at the final fence, which the favourite was not good at. Djakadam was surprisingly tame up the hill, not really getting home, and any doubts about Sizing John’s stamina were put to bed, as he found plenty for a drive.

So did Minella Rocco, a proven stayer, and he was chasing him all the way to the wire, while Djakadam was done for a place by Native River. Saphir Du Rheu ran a pleasing race in fifth, with More Of That well clear of the remainder in sixth.

Interestingly, the Grade Two National Hunt Chase form (of 2016) came to the fore here. Minella Rocco won that, with Native River second.
