Buccs on verge of promotion

- Daragh Small

BUCCANEERS can gain promotion to the top tier of the Ulster Bank League this weekend if they can get the better of Naas in their meeting at Dubarry Park.

Buccaneers have not been in Division 1A since the league was restructured in 2010, but Brett Wilkinson’s side have been phenomenal in Division 1B this season.

They lost against Ballynahinch on the opening day of the season, but since then had not been defeated in a league fixture until they succumbed to a loss against UCC in Mardyke earlier this month, which was a minor setback.

Buccaneers’ brilliant run included 12 wins and they will look to make that 13, this weekend, to become the only Connacht team in the top division next season.

Elsewhere, Galwegians continue to struggle in the bottom half of the table, and they need to win their massive relegation eight-pointer against Dolphin at Crowley Park this weekend.

Galwegians are ninth in the table, and just four points ahead of their Cork opponents coming into this game.

But the Galway outfit are four points behind eighth-placed Shannon, so victory would go a long way towards securing their safety following a dismal season back in the second tier.

In Division 2A, Corinthians are also in trouble towards the bottom half of the table.

They are ninth in the standings going into their crucial game against Cashel at Corinthian Park tomorrow.

In the bottom tier, Sligo must continue their brilliant form to keep the pressure on at the top of the division.

The Connacht outfit are second in the table, four points behind leaders Navan, ahead of their trip to Kanturk.
